Rainbow Hair Roundup: Pinks & Purples

Rainbow Hair DIY Tips: Pastel Pinks

July 18, 2018

I am obsessed with magical rainbow pastel hair colors. Here's a roundup of some of my favorite fashion hair color looks that I've created. Keep scrolling if you love pastel pink, peach and rose gold hair!

I use a lot of different color lines - usually Manic Panic, Joico, Lunar Tides, and Pravana. I've included product details throughout that I love to use and would recommend for DIY hair color jobs.

Bonus! Make sure to download your free accompaniment to this post, the Magic Hair Cheat Sheets: Warm Colors Edition, a beautiful hair color guide book I created for fellow rainbow hair fiends. It includes all of the tips and products listed in this post, and then some!

And if you're looking for cool colors - my favorite products for creating smoky blues, turquoise, and greens - be sure to check out the other half of this series, Rainbow Hair DIY Tips: Cool Colors.

DIY Pastel Hair Color Tip: Pastels work best on hair that's been pre-lightened and toned to as close to white as possible. Apply to conditioned and dry hair and make sure you purchase enough product to fully saturate all of your hair. I generally estimate one tub per 6" of hair.

DIY Warm Pastel Hair Color Tip: When virgin hair babes consult with me about pastel colors, I often recommend starting off with warm colors because they're gentler on your hair and easier to maintain. All pastel colors require pre-lightening, and the first time you lighten your hair you'll probably get to a yellow, not white. Yellow is a warm color, so it works with your warm pastels rather than becoming muddy!

DIY Powder Pink Hair Color Tip: I like to buy the most concentrated colors I can find because I can dilute them and make them last longer. Mix a dollop of color into your favorite conditioner before applying to dry hair.

PS: The pop of pink in this fishtail braid crown is actually synthetic hair braided in!

DIY Peach/Rose Gold Hair Color Tip: Peach and rose gold are surprisingly elusive DIY hair colors to find. Most of the dyes I've used lean more to the pink side. Tinge Pastel is an indie hair color company and their peach tint is so on point that this isn't even an affiliate link! I just want to share this excellent color with you.

Which color is your favorite??

One final pastel hair tip: The thing about pastel hair colors is they're sooo pretty but they fade super fast. One tip I recommend to everyone, regardless of hair texture, is to style your hair after every wash with R&CO High Dive. It's a leave-in conditioner that contains UV protection and heat protection, to help your color last as long as possible! It also makes your hair super silky and shiny.
